How to store your jewelry to keep it beautiful
Handmade jewelry is made to be worn, but also to be well cared for. With the right storage method, your handmade earrings, gold jewelry, and gold-plated jewelry will stay beautiful longer and you'll prevent scratches, discoloration, and tarnishing.
Why proper storage is so important
Jewelry is more delicate than you might think. Metal can react with air, moisture, and even with other metals. If jewelry is stored loosely together, you often see scratches, discoloration, or tarnishing appear more quickly.
Opt for soft lining
The inside of your jewelry box is at least as important as the box itself. Soft materials such as velvet, velour, or cotton protect your unique jewelry from scratches and keep it in place. It's best to avoid hard or rough surfaces.
Keep different metals separate
Not all metals get along well. When jewelry touches each other, they can react and tarnish faster. It is therefore smart to store silver jewelry, gold jewelry, and gold-plated jewelry separately.
Preferably place them in separate compartments or pouches. You especially want to protect gold-plated earrings from rubbing against other metals.
Use individual pouches or compartments
Don't have a jewelry box with compartments? Small fabric pouches are a great solution. Store earrings in pairs to prevent them from rubbing against each other.
Protect your jewelry from air and moisture
Moisture and oxygen are the biggest causes of tarnishing. Therefore, do not store jewelry in the bathroom and close boxes or pouches tightly. A small desiccant packet in your jewelry box can also help.
Taking jewelry with you when traveling
Use a travel case with separate compartments or wrap jewelry in a soft cloth. This way, your handmade jewelry will remain well protected even when you're on the go.
With a little attention, your jewelry will stay beautiful longer and you'll enjoy wearing it again and again.
